Ground Beef Carne Asada Tacos Avocado
It's Taco Tuesday! I had a bunch of cilantro that was going bad, and fast – which prompted me to make this awesome cilantro avocado lime sauce/dressing. It is so good I could eat it on anything and everything. I didn't fully measure things when I made it, but I think I got it pretty close with the recipe. This could be thinned down a little and put on a salad as a dressing. OR drizzled over some grilled shrimp. Yum
Well, after making this sauce, I thought it be delicious with steak which brings us to our carne asada tacos. I was inspired by one of my favorite food bloggers who makes amazing authentic and Mexican inspired recipes, Isabel Eats. I adapted her carne asada marinade recipe, but with very few changes other than halving the recipe for less meat and a few tiny tweaks. You can check out her original recipe here and I suggest you peruse her page for additional recipes. I've made several of her recipes and they never disappoint.
Guys, these were sooo good. The marinade was perfect (thanks Isabel!) and the sauce went so well with it. I have mine with flour tortillas and Nevy had his with corn- both were great. I love my tacos served ours with some homemade pickled onions, jalapeño, and cotija cheese. They were excellent and so versatile/customizable!

- 1 tsp red pepper flakes*
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- pinch black pepper
- For the Cilantro Avocado Lime Sauce
- 1 cup cilantro
- 1/2 cup greek yogurt
- 1/2 avocado
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- juice of 1 lime
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 clove garlic
- 1/2 tsp salt
- For the Tacos
- 8 corn or flour tortillas
- Cilantro Avocado Lime Sauce
- Sour Cream
- Cotija, crumbled
- 1/2 jalapeno, minced
- Lime wedges, for serving
- 1/8 cup cilantro, chopped
Instructions
- For the Carne Asada Marinade : Whisk marinade ingredients together in a bowl (except the steak), until well combined.
- Place the steak in large, gallon sized ziplock bag. Pour the marinade over the steak and mix until fully coated with the marinade. Refrigerate for 2-4 hours.
- Remove steak from marinade and discard any excess marinade. Pat steak dry with paper towels and drizzle with a touch of olive oil, then season lightly with salt and pepper on both sides.
- Preheat grill pan to medium-high heat. Grill steaks with the lid closed for 4-6 minutes per side, depending on the thickness.
- Remove steaks and allow to rest for 5 minutes. Slice into bite-sized chunks or strips for tacos.
- For the Cilantro Avocado Lime Sauce : Add all ingredients to a blender or food processor. Blend until completely smooth.
- Transfer to a jar, cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. If you are able to make before ahead of time, even better!
- For the Tacos : Warm your tortillas up! Spread a layer of the Cilantro Avocado Lime Sauce and sour cream on those bad boys and top with carne asada.
- Top with Cotija, cilantro, minced jalapeño, a squeeze of lime, and any of your favorite toppings! Enjoy!
Notes
*Isabel's recipe calls for ancho chili powder, but I didn't have any so I subbed red pepper flakes!
